About Guillermo Tolentino:
Born in 1890 at Malolos, Bulacan, Guillermo is the Philippines' first National Artist for Sculpture. His works are often described as a Filipino classicism movement with inflections and nuances of what is heroic and monumental. He is known for his sculptures that honor our heroes in the Philippines and leave a historical mark that will make the Filipinos remember our history.
In 1926, he became an instructor for sculpture at the School of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines. He was teaching at UP with notable artists such as Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo Tolentino, and Dominador Castañeda. One of his well-known artworks is located at the heart of UP and entitled "The Oblation" which expresses freedom, truth, and love for the country.
